Newsletter - April 2013

As I write this newsletter it appears that “spring has sprung” as the sun is warming up the air and the persistent north east wind has slackened somewhat. I even noticed this morning during my walk with the Impala Dog Poppy that some daffodils were in full bloom, albeit in the shelter of a beech wood.

The adventures are booking up well, with our immense Russian journey almost full (one place left) and the first four cars for The Atlantic Coast, Oued Draa and The Sahara have sent their deposits in so I am looking to get eight cars for October, so if you are trying to find reasons why you cannot not come on our adventures then I implore you to just come along and enjoy the winter sun and a certain exciting adventure.

For 2014 we will be running a new adventure to Philadelphia in the USA with a good friend of mine and Louise’s, namely Bill Moss. The details will be in a special newsletter that will be coming out a week after this one lands in your mailbox.

This year I am planning to fit a waterproof ignition system to the blue Impala Range Rover that will enable it to cross the Russian Rivers with some aplomb.  I have watched some videos of a Land Rover with such a system driving through water that was most definitely higher than bonnet height without the slightest concern.

I have listed the events for 2014 as well as for 2013 so that you can peruse each one and find the one that suits you to come on and enjoy some time with us at Impala.

Impala Adventures 2013 / 2014

Russia, The Kola Peninsular and White Sea.

12th to 25th August 2013

ONE PLACE LEFT

What can I say: this adventure is astounding! The route that we take across the forests and lakes near Monchegorsk: the summer track along the ridge between Umba and Oktyabrsky and the old sand road running along the White Sea make this adventure a challenge of Camel Trophy proportions.

Both you and your car will be tested well here in the forests of Russia, as you will be crossing rivers with bonnet high water, rock fields and marsh as well as working your way around the edge of a lake. Along The White Sea the tracks are sand with some exciting estuary crossings as well as mud through the Pine Forest. This forest has an extraordinary feel as it stretches all the way around the world at this latitude which is quite humbling as your eyes gaze out across its wilderness.

The rules of Russia insist that we stay at a hotel within seventy two hours of crossing the border, so that our movements can be traced easily. Even so this adventure will still be one of Wild Camps deep in nature, to conform to the rules we will stay at a guest house that is run by a Dutch friend of mine and also at a magnificent Soviet hotel set in the centre of Kandalaksha.

The route from England to Russia is an adventure in itself as we cross Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Finland on the way to the start at Salla. The historic Norwegian town of Bergen is on the route south back to England after the adventure. You can book the last place by either sending me an email  or call my mobile 07930910870.

Russia, The Kola Peninsular and White Sea £2,800 per car (2 people)

Morocco-The Atlantic Coast, Oued Draa and the Sahara

21st October to 5th November 2013

This Impala route is the best yet and you will be off-roading from the afternoon of day 3, right up to the evening of day 12. Not only will you travel the tracks that run above the cliffs beside the Atlantic and the immense flood plain of the Oued Draa, but also enjoy the sands and dunes of Lac Iriki, not along its northern edge, an area used by most who cross its vastness, but to the south where the driving is more challenging and the wild camps more remote. One of the many highlights is a 45km dash along the sandy beach of Plage Blanche culminating at a beautiful wild camp site near the mouth of the Oued Aounet El Ksab.

Essaouria, Sidi Ifni, Tan Tan and of course Marrakech are some of the towns that you will visit on the way and we have factored in time to enjoy them to the full. There are three rest days (Fort Bou Jerif, Kasbah Azalay and Le Coq Hardi) so that you can just sit back and let the incredible sights, sounds and smells of Morocco settle in your mind, over a gin and tonic or a beer of course!!

The route with details of the hotels and wild camps is laid out below. The price of £2,650 (car with two passengers) includes the usual Impala Support, roadbooks with maps showing the daily routes and the following:

  • Evening meal on the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander/Santander to Portsmouth
  • 15% discount available for the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander if booked through Impala Adventures
  • Return ferry from Tarifa to Tanger with an open return
  • Bed and breakfast at Ibis Hotel in El Jadida
  • Bed and breakfast at a Riad in Essaouria
  • Dinner, bed and breakfast at Hotel Aglou Beach
  • Two nights camping with dinner at Fort Bou Jerif ( it is possible to upgrade to the Petit Hotel or Motel for £50 per person )
  • Two nights dinner, bed and breakfast at the Kasbah Azalay Hotel
  • Said our Moroccan mechanic will clean air filters, grease props and check cars over during the rest day at Kasbah Azalay.
  • Two nights dinner, bed and breakfast the hotel Le Coq Hardi at Ait Ourir

We have four places left on this adventure so if you would like to come along and join in the fun then you can do that by either sending me an email or call my mobile 07930910870.

We will also be running this route in 2014 from 7th April to 22nd April and we are taking provisional bookings now.

Picos Mountains and Cantabria

25th April to 4th May 2014

We have just finished our reconnaissance and what a successful one it was. The variety of tracks in Cantabria from The Dehesa (Spanish Oak Forest) to high passes in the Saja Besaya have allowed us to make an exciting route that encompasses not only some fantastic off road driving but also the ancient culture and spectacular wildlife of this part of Spain.

We visit megalithic monuments and some of the most awe-inspiring rock art that I have ever seen. The air is overflowing with Griffon Vultures and both Red and Black Kites, while down at our level wild flowers fill the meadows with a scent of spring.

There are eight places on this adventure with two support cars.

The route with cost will be on the web site soon after we arrive back in England from Spain at the end of April. So if you are interested in joining us in 2014 then you can provisionally book a place by either sending me an email (neil@impalaadventures.co.uk) or call me on my mobile 07930 910870.

South of England Greenlane Adventure

8th to 14th June 2014

This will be the second running of this route in the south of England and we have picked the best lanes across Salisbury Plain as well as adding some tremendous lanes in Devon that Steve Pitt and I had a lot of fun “checking out” in 2012.

The tracks range from chalk on grass, narrow tree lined Saxon roads and steep rocky climbs in amongst trees in Devon. There is also some deep water on the military land near Tilshead which can be avoided if your car does not have a snorkel fitted or this could be the excuse that you were looking for to get one fitted!!!. We are also using tracks high above the sea along the Dorset Coast. Some of them are very exciting to drive, with one of the highlights at Eggardon Hill, an Iron Age fort with stunning views out to sea from the heights above Bridport.

This adventure is now a camping one. We shall be using good camp sites, staying at some for two days or more. The first is a field “attached “to The Woodbridge Inn in Wiltshire.

The South of England £500 per car (2 people)
