Newsletter - November 2013

We have not long been back from Russia and what a fantastic trip it was: Russia always surprises and this year was no exception as the summer above the Arctic Circle hit record highs with days of 28°C and very little rain since May. I was told that the trees sprouted their leaves three weeks early and that mosquitoes were few and far between but numerous enough to feed a bumper brood of birds. Interestingly we saw a lot more Russians along the White Sea coast enjoying a weekend break and it seems that many people are now more prosperous and can afford an Off Road car to explore the wilds of their country.
Our new Moroccan Adventure along the Atlantic Coast is booking up well for next April and I am hoping to take along ten of you to enjoy the Plage Blanche and the immensity of The Draa Valley. One of the highlights of this adventure is standing, deep in a mountain valley looking at the rock carvings that are at least 1000yrs old: they are just sitting there on a red rock that slopes gently out of a stream bed. The hotels that we are using all have a local feel and character but with good to exceptional quality. One, Le Coq Hardi at Ait Ourir, has now been taken over by Karims brother and he is bringing it forward to a high standard now. It now supports a refurbished swimming pool and an outside restaurant overlooking the river that the locals love.
Closer to home In June we will be running a week of greenlaning along the lanes and byways in the south of England from Salisbury Plain to Dorset with an excursion to the delights of Exmoor and Devon on the way. In Exmoor we will be camping at Pulhams Mill again where you can enjoy one of and Pauline and Ian evening meals and or breakfast. The trip ends at Mapperton Farm in Dorset. This farm belongs to one of my Porsche colleagues and is a beautiful place to end an adventure with a barbecue looking out across the hills of Dorset.
In the planning stage we have three adventures: Namibia Spring 2015Pennsylvania 2015 and next year a Weekend of Off Roading in Warwickshire solely for our Impala Group. If you are interested in any of these events then can you let me know and I will keep you updated. We will post the dates as soon as they are firmed up.

Impala Adventures 2014

Morocco - The Atlantic Coast, Oued Draa and the Sahara

7th to 22nd April 2014

This Impala route is the best yet and you will be off roading from the afternoon of day 3, right up to the evening of day 12. Not only will you travel the tracks that run above the cliffs beside the Atlantic and the immense flood plain of the Oued Draa, but also enjoy the sands and dunes of Lac Iriki. We will not be travelling along its northern edge, an area used by most who cross its vastness, but to the south where the driving is more challenging and the wild camps more remote. One of the many highlights is a 45km dash along the sandy beach of Plage Blanche culminating at a beautiful wild campsite near the mouth of the Oued Aounet El Ksab.
Essaouria, Sid Ifni, Tan Tan and of course Marrakech are some of the towns that you will visit on the way and we have factored in time to enjoy them to the full. There are three rest days (Fort Bou Jerif, Kasbah Azalay and Le Coq Hardi) so that you can just sit back and let the incredible sights, sounds and smells of Morocco settle in your mind, over a gin and tonic or a beer of course!!
The price of this adventure to Morocco is £2,650.00 (car with two passengers) and includes the usual Impala Support, Roadbooks with maps showing the daily routes and the following:

South of England Greenlane Adventure

8th to 14th June 2014

This will be the second running of this route in the south of England and we have picked the best lanes from the first run across Salisbury Plain as well as adding some new exciting lanes in Devon that Steve Pitt and I had a lot of fun “checking out” in 2012.
The tracks that you will be driving on range from chalk on grass, narrow tree lined Saxon roads and steep rocky climbs in amongst trees in Devon. There is also some deep water on the military land near Tilshead and also a couple of crossings of Tarr Steps in Devon, which can be avoided if your car does not have a snorkel fitted or this could be the excuse that you were looking for to get one fitted!!! We are also using tracks high above the sea along the Dorset Coast. One of the highlights of this adventure is the Iron Age Fort of Eggardon Hill and its stunning views out to sea from the heights above Bridport.
We will be using campsites for most of the nights with one Wild Camp for two nights in a field near Pulhams Mill on Exmoor. Our meeting campsite is at The Woodbridge Inn near Pewsey.
The price of this adventure to South of England £500.00 (car with two passengers) and includes the usual Impala Support, Roadbooks with maps showing the daily routes and the following:
  • If required, a weekends training prior to the Adventure
  • Three nights camping at sites with toilets and showers
  • Four nights camping with toilets only
  • Dinner and breakfast option at Pulhams Mill at The Exmoor Wild Camp with use of their toilets
  • Barbecue at Mapperton Farm on the last nights camp

The South of England £500.00 per car (2 people)

Russia - The Kola Peninsula and The White Sea

1st to 14th August 2014

In August 2013 we ran this adventure from The White Sea to Monchegorsk and then onto the most challenging track to the Finnish border at Raja Joosepi. This proved to be the best way to run this adventure as the tracks become progressively more challenging as the days go by allowing everyone to get accustomed to the Russian Forests and gain confidence off road.  The route that we take across the forests and lakes near Monchegorsk, the summer track along the ridge between Umba and Oktyabrsky and the old sand road running along the White Sea make this adventure a challenge of Camel Trophy proportions.
Both you and your car will be tested well here in the forests of Russia, as you will be crossing rivers with bonnet high water, rock fields and marsh as well as working your way around the edge of a lake. Along The White Sea the tracks are sand with some exciting estuary crossings as well as mud through the Pine Forest. This forest has an extraordinary feel as it stretches all the way around the world at this latitude which is quite humbling as your eyes gaze out across its wilderness.
The rules of Russia insist that we stay at a hotel within twenty four hours of crossing the border, so that our movements can be traced easily. Even though this adventure will still be one of Wild Camps deep in nature, to conform to the rules we will stay at a guest house that is run by a Dutch friend of mine and also at a magnificent Soviet hotel set in the centre of Kandalaksha.
The route from England to Russia is an adventure in itself and we can advise you on routes across Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Finland on the way to the start at Salla. We have a special route home for you to try via Norway if you can find the time to add a few more days to your journey home.
The price of this adventure to Russia, The Kola Peninsula and White Sea £2,800.00 (car with two passengers) and includes the usual Impala Support, Roadbooks with maps showing the daily routes and the following:
  • A weekends training prior to the Adventure
  • One night bed and breakfast at the hotel Belamorie in Kandalaksha
  • One night at the Lodochny Lodges beside the White Sea
  • Two nights dinner, bed and breakfast at Yolki Polki Guesthouse in Oktyabrsky
  • One nights dinner, bed and breakfast at Lapinleuku in Ivalo Finland
  • Visa invitations and visa assistance

Russia, The Kola Peninsula and White Sea £2,800.00 per car (2 people)
